Photography Workshops "Getting you to the right place at the right time
2008 Workshop Schedule
This is a wonderful historic city with numerous photo venues. We'll be spending our time photographing historic Charleston architecture and the famous Batterie Park, full of red azalea along the waterfront, to Magnolia Gardens, where the explosions of colorful flowers, huge magnolia trees, and bald cyprus swamps signal the beginning of spring time. We'll also visit Cypress Gardens, where the movie "The Patriot" was made!
This is the first of two consecutive workshops in the Smokies. This time frame should place us in the Smokies when dogwood are in bloom and the streams are beginning to run fully. Also, early spring skies can be quite dramatic. Spring wildflowers are beginning to bloom, and we wouldn't be surprised if there is spring snow and hoar frost covering the mountain tops! There are layered mountain ridges and photogenic old historic settlements. FULL
The class will go out at dawn and dusk to make pictures, as in our Visual Artistry workshops. During extended class time, Jim White will conduct seminars on scanning (film), image processing and editing (film and digital), profiling, and digital print making. We will have a Nikon 9000 film scanner and Epson small and medium format printers on hand for print output. St. Michael's is a historic city on Maryland's eastern shore. Wildflowers are up and Hooper Island light is a tremendous sunrise and sunset venue. Tilghman's Island is full of working fishing boats. We are close to Blackwater wildlife preserve and historic Oxford is a fertile photo venue with very old homes, great reflections, and sunset light.
Something catches your eye—you know that something's there, but you may not recognize the picture immediately. So you start looking harder. The whole process up to the point of taking the picture is in your imagination. Hit the shutter and you make it real. Further presentations, will be on many topics including subject selection, using and managing natural light, glass and digital filters, creative techniques and various compositional techniques. There is one guiding principle: Every single thing in the picture space either helps or hurts the image; there's nothing neutral.

The White Mountains of NH are one of the best fall venues in the country featuring brilliant reds and golds, colorful flowing streams, overlooks, birch forests, and numerous macro opportunities. This is a tour where class instruction will be plentiful, but field instruction will be minimal. We will be visiting my favorite locations, some very specific and generally not well known. The color window is very short and I'll be shooting along with the class, but will always be available for field help when needed. This class is geared towards the advanced amateur photographer.
The Delaware Water Gap is one of the best fall venues on the east coast. There is often a thin layer of mist on the mirror lakes at dawn, and the fall color and reflections opportunites are ample. Child's Park is the crown jewel of the park and has waterfalls and streams nestled within brilliant fall color. The New Jersey side is very different and offers a crator lake, forests, and old structures.
