This other-worldly location is one of our favorites. This is like shooting on the moon – incredible, colorful, graphic, easily accessible and wide open to interpretation from stitched pans to HDR, from shooting the Milky Way to dramatic sunsets on Sheep Mountain! The terrain goes from full-frame sandstone teepees to soft rolling hills populated by cottonwood trees, and 2 totally photogenic old, abandoned towns. Buffalo may be seen in the area, as are prairie dog towns. As with all our workshops, we’ll have ample field instruction and daily critiques. During the critiques, we will discuss various aspects of the images: composition and processing, also we will demonstrate software that we use.

The slideshow below illustrates some of the locations we’ll visit and
the types of images you could be shooting with us in the Badlands.

Prerequisites
Participants should have a working knowledge of exposure (f/stop and shutter speed) and know how to operate their equipment. Please bring a laptop computer with a RAW processor and image editing software to prepare your images for critique. Film shooters are encouraged to borrow a digital SLR so that they can have images for critique sessions – and maximize the workshop’s learning experience.

General itinerary
Each day’s schedule varies according to which location we visit that day, how long we shoot and what the weather conditions are. We could photograph all day if conditions are right and then have more class time the following day. Questions and problems will be addressed in the field whenever possible, which is the most effective way to learn nature and landscape photography.

Monday night at 5 pm
Opening night presentation, Q&A’s, orientation (it would be a good idea to have dinner on your own before the opening meeting)

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
Photograph sunrise and/or early morning and late afternoon and/or sunset – and whenever the light is right. There will be presentations and critiques during the day.

Friday
Photograph in the morning or have class time; discussion and final thoughts over breakfast. We should be finished by checkout time.

Personal critique service
To continue your learning beyond the workshop, all participants may add three months of Tony’s personal photo critiques, via email, for just $600. With this service, you’ll receive helpful, informative critiques of 20 of images per month, as well as liberal email support for questions and advice.

Frequent attendee discount
If you take more than one of our workshops in the same workshop year, you’ll receive a 10% discount on your second workshop and 15% off on three or more workshops.
