February 11-15, 2018:
Great Smoky Mountains Winter
$1,450, limit 10
Based out of Townsend, TN, this is our longest standing photography workshop venue. Over our 25 years photographing in the Smokies, we have discovered and continue to discover many great places to photograph.
We’ll be photographing cool sunrise locales, Cades Cove fog (conditions permitting), icy streams, graphic macro subjects, composing using bare trees, deer will be out, old homesteads, and there is an excellent possibility for snow and rime ice in the higher elevations. Days are still fairly short, which will give us the option to photograph star trails on a clear night. There will be ample field assistance, along with an opening night presentation and orientation. We will have processing and critique sessions during the week. There is seldom a bad day in the Smokies and we look forward to sharing this venue during this magical time of year.

Participants should have a working knowledge of exposure (f/stop and shutter speed) and know how to operate their equipment. Please bring a laptop computer with a RAW processor and image editing software to prepare your images for critique. Film shooters are encouraged to borrow a digital SLR so that they can have images for critique sessions – and maximize the workshop’s learning experience.
Each day’s schedule varies according to which location we visit that day, how long we shoot and what the weather conditions are. We could photograph all day if conditions are right and then have more class time the following day. Questions and problems will be addressed in the field whenever possible, which is the most effective way to learn nature and landscape photography.
First night at 5 pm
Opening night presentation, Q&A’s, orientation (it would be a good idea to have dinner on your own before the opening meeting).
The next three days
Photograph sunrise and/or early morning and late afternoon and/or sunset – and whenever the light is right. There will be processing, critiques, and presentations during the week.
Photograph in the morning or have class time; discussion and final thoughts over breakfast. We should be finished by checkout time.
Personal critique service
To continue your learning beyond the workshop, all participants may add three months of Tony’s personal photo critiques, via email, for just $600. With this service, you’ll receive helpful, informative critiques of 20 of images per month, as well as liberal email support for questions and advice.
